More than a side scrolling.

Awesome work you did in three days (i hope no one will tell you "poor effort"...)
Cause that's a real nice project you submitted here.
Indeed it's more than a vertical side-scrolling, the formation of the bugs is a key-element that brings strategy in the game. It allows you to shoot in every direction, each strategy having its strenghts and weakness.
The difficulty increases perfectly, so it's entertaining 'til the end.
The graphisms were nice too, and the drawings of the beginning quite funny. Nevertheless, i'm not sure i recognized which part of the human body was represented by each ennemy (does every human have some blue balls with teeth, spitting acid inside him ?). ;)
I'm not really found of the music but it was well-done and well introduced, and suited well to the atmosphere, kind of a mix of adventure and insanity.
So bravo for this nice little game.

PS : Maybe it's just me, but when i'm in fullscreen, the numbers can't be used any more to change formation. Would be cool to try to fix it.

Entertaining

I was impressed by the quality of this little game.
That's just another avoidal game, but there are some elements that make it different.
The graphism are pretty cool, the boxes, the hand, the witches, everything is coherent and suit well to the background. The overall is nicely backed by the dark music. And it is cool both to avoid and target in the same time.

Thought there is one defect in my mind which spoil this minigame a bit. So here is my complaint : there is no increasment of difficulty. I noticed that each time you "click in a box" (sorry, that makes me think about some song, he he), a witch is spawned. That's a good idea, but that keeps being the same until you die. Maybe, you could spawn 2 witches by box from the 50th. Or make the mana fill up more slowly. Or spawn witches independently from clicking on the box, to prevent you from waiting in a corner that your mana refilled up to kill all the ennemies.
I guess a work on difficulty would make this game more attractive.
(Sorry for my english, i hope you got me)

Funny short game

Ok, i figured out how to win the game (ha ha) !
Overall, it's a funny little game. This not-serious-dark-world is well drawn, such as the characters which suit well to this nice background, and the contrasting and flashy colors are perfect (particularly for this kind of game). The idea of making your little red guy disappear entirely but his eyes is amusing, and i also liked the small cartoonish "eye-animation" when you're hit. Finally I had pleasure to bring him to the exit (is that an exit ? a race ? let's say to the end).

Though, it definitely has got a limitated interest. Originality isn't this flash's first virtue. I guess it can't be enjoyable more than 5 minutes.
Obviously, it was not the aim, so finally, for a first game, it's rather a success. Nice.

Thank you very much for your detailed and honest review :)
This game is fairly simple but surely it's the first of many. Having music, sfx, an ending, putting it all together was very rewarding. Even if the game is not serious, I like to think that it shows how serious I can be when I do graphics and concepts.
It's a big step for me, since I wanted to make games for 15 years. I started many games but sadly I always had to abandon them for various reasons. So this is a landmark for me!
Im glad you like the graphics, I was told the ghosts and the background dont really fit together. Thanks again for the possitive feedback!

Great game.

Everything is nicely done in this game.

Really old school : pixels, B&W (actually it's more Yellow and Green... or blue ? bah, nevermind...), and the simplicity of the gameplay. Could be on gameboy easily.

The difficulty is perfectly well dosed. It's really hard at the beginning, but when you've reached the end, it gets really easier (cause of practising) and the difficulty is no longer in how to beat the game but how to do it in less than 3:00 or without dying.
Anyway the concept was good, and the realisation followed perfectly. The graphism were nice, and the main character looks original. I like the way the flowers move when you walk on them (while you can still do it). The idea of the "rules" was very good. They keep this platformer interesting and make its originality. I needed a few lives before understanding the "you cannot walk left", he he.

To finish, it's impossible not to notice the quality of the music. Very nice themes and arrangements. Respect.

Brilliant.

Excellent idea, very good realisation.
That's quite a simple game in its conception, and there's no need to wonder a lot to understand it.
Though, it's perfectly done. Really effective, and doesn't waste any time (with purged menus). Good choice of music, quite stressful and heavy. The timing is perfect between the moment you realize where are the gaps and when the gates close and the controls are absolutely not glitchy.
Well done, it's really good and i guess very addictive.

Man...

Come on... I beat this bastard twice in 2'15 and 2'15... But at the end the screen is just blocked on "victory". And nothing more happens. No medals, no glory...

Anyway. That's really a good game, particularly with such a time limit. You must have worked very hard to present a flash that clean and complete. Especially if you were only the two of you. Nothing we could call very original, but perfectly done, the controls are good and the ship is well answering and easy to move. The drawings are cool. The music suits well to the ambience. It's a success.

If i just had smthg to complain about (except this blocking and frustration at the end), it would be that it's not always easy to notice if you touch the vilain or not.

Good job.

I became aware of that Victory screen thing about an hour ago, but couldn't do anything about it because of classes :P I'm on the case now. - Brian

EDIT: Fixed (in 1.1.6). But due to Newground's policies, the update will take 24-48 hours to go live.

Totally honorable

For a first game that's a nice first try.
Yeah, of course, that's not what we could call an original game. But still, in its genre, it's well realized. The menus look ok, no problem with the music either.
The speed is quite interesting cause ennemies really come fast.
Maybe the bad point is the background which is too colored and that doesn't detach itself from the rest, which gives an impression of confusion or at least makes ennemies hard to distinguish.
Another thing is that sometimes that just doesn't work. I'm just not hitten by ennemies, or i can't take power ups. You should fix it, if you can.
The last point is that it is too... easy ! Maybe giving more life to them would be a good idea.
Anyway, i rated you as a first game, I hope you'll find my criticism constructive enough to help you make something even better for next time.
Anyway, good work for a first creation !

RocMegamanX responds:

I don't know how to make the hitbox larger.

Do I need to desaturate the background? Also, I didn't know how to program them to shoot projectiles. I didn't know how they would shoot projectiles, seeing as how they have no visible gun turrets.

Can you please help me through PM? Thanks!

Very good.

Beautiful game, very poetic and cute.
The aim is quite original, and even if it's not the kind of game i usually like, I really apreciate it. Very good work.
The difficulty is not very high without being totally easy but no one cares cause it's not the important part in this kind of game.
Thanks for this moment of calm.

10/10

I'm not afraid to put a 10...
This game is really awesome !
The speed is good, the difficulty too, the graphics are great and funny, music kinda cool, the characters are really different and you can't play the same with each, etc.
And Halloween mode is a real plus.
I guess i'll stop here. :)

P.S. : That's my firs review so it's kinda tribute to this game. :)
